Gorilla Trekking
Few wildlife experiences feel as personal as standing quietly in the forest and watching mountain gorillas in their natural home. Gorilla trekking is a guided forest walk that takes you deep into protected mountain rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are usually allowed to spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they feed, rest, play, groom, and move through the forest.
It is not just a safari activity. It is a rare chance to connect with one of the world’s most remarkable endangered species, while directly supporting conservation, park protection, and local communities.
Mountain gorillas are only found in a small part of East and Central Africa, across Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. Their survival depends heavily on conservation, protected habitats, anti-poaching work, veterinary care, and responsible tourism.
The global mountain gorilla population has grown from very low numbers in the past to just over 1,000 individuals in recent years, making them one of conservation’s most encouraging success stories.
Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
In Uganda, gorilla trekking is done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both located in southwestern Uganda. Uganda Wildlife Authority notes that Uganda has more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, found in Bwindi and on the Virunga mountain slopes in Mgahinga.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s most popular gorilla trekking destination. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most biologically rich forests, with over 120 mammal species and 350 bird species.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a quieter gorilla trekking experience in the Virunga Mountains. The park sits near the borders of Rwanda and DR Congo, and gorilla tracking starts from the Ntebeko Visitor Centre. UWA notes that tracking typically lasts about 3 to 5 hours, depending on where the gorillas are found.
Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
In Rwanda, gorilla trekking is done in Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwestern part of the country. The park is part of the wider Virunga Conservation Area and is one of the most famous mountain gorilla destinations in Africa.
Rwanda’s official tourism platform lists gorilla tracking as one of the key experiences in Volcanoes National Park, with permits currently priced at US$1,500 per person per day for international visitors. The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years.
What Happens During a Gorilla Trek?
The day usually begins early with a briefing from park rangers. Visitors are placed into small groups and assigned a gorilla family to track. The trek can be short or long depending on where the gorillas moved the previous night.
You then enter the forest with trained guides and trackers. The walk may involve muddy trails, thick vegetation, slopes, and changing weather, so a reasonable level of fitness helps.
When the gorillas are found, the pace changes. Everyone keeps calm, quiet, and respectful. You watch from a safe distance as the gorillas go about their day. Sometimes the silverback sits nearby like a quiet king. Sometimes young gorillas play in the branches. Sometimes the whole family simply rests together.
That one hour often becomes the highlight of an entire African safari.
Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year. However, many travellers prefer the drier months, usually from June to September and December to February, because forest trails are generally easier to walk.
That said, rain can happen at any time in mountain rainforest areas. Good hiking shoes, a light rain jacket, long trousers, garden gloves, and a small daypack are strongly recommended.
