Is Uganda Worth Visiting for a Safari in East Africa?

When people think of an African safari, they often think of Kenya or Tanzania first. That is fair. Those countries are famous for big open plains, huge animal numbers, and the Great Migration. But Uganda offers something different, and that difference is exactly why many travellers end up loving it.

Uganda is not just a “sit in the car and look at animals” destination. It gives you a mix of wildlife, forests, lakes, rivers, culture, and real adventure. One day you can be watching elephants and lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Another day you can be walking through a thick forest to see mountain gorillas. Another day you can be on the Nile, taking a boat cruise near Murchison Falls, watching hippos, crocodiles, birds, and animals coming to the water.

That variety is one of Uganda’s biggest strengths.

The biggest reason many tourists come to Uganda is gorilla trekking. Mountain gorillas are rare, powerful, calm, and deeply moving to see in real life. You do not just drive past them. You walk into their forest with trained guides and trackers, then spend a limited time quietly observing them. It feels personal, respectful, and unforgettable.

But Uganda is not only about gorillas.

If you love classic safari animals, Uganda still gives you plenty. Murchison Falls National Park is great for giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, lions, antelopes, and boat safaris. Queen Elizabeth National Park is known for game drives, crater views, boat trips on the Kazinga Channel, and the famous tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. Kibale Forest is one of the best places for chimpanzee tracking. Lake Mburo is smaller, easier to access, and good for relaxed safaris, zebras, and shorter trips.

Another thing tourists like about Uganda is that it feels less crowded in many places. In some destinations, safari can feel like everyone is rushing to the same animal sighting. Uganda often feels more natural and less overdone. You get space, scenery, and a slower rhythm.

Uganda is also a good option for travellers who want more than luxury. You can do high-end lodges, yes, but you can also plan mid-range and more practical trips. The roads can be long, and some places are remote, but that is also part of the adventure. You are not just ticking boxes. You are travelling through a real country, with changing landscapes, roadside markets, tea plantations, villages, lakes, hills, and forests.

The honest answer is this: Uganda is worth visiting if you want a safari that feels rich, varied, and emotional. It may not be the place for someone who only wants the most polished, easy, predictable safari. But if you want wildlife, gorillas, people, nature, and a strong sense of place, Uganda is hard to beat.

Afoyo African Safaris helps travellers build trips that match their pace, budget, and interests. Whether you want gorillas, wildlife, culture, photography, or a bit of everything, Uganda gives you a safari story you will actually remember.
