Rwenzori Mountains National Park – Uganda’s Majestic “Mountains of the Moon”

Rwenzori Mountains National Park, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in western Uganda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering approximately 1,000 square kilometres, the park is famous for its towering snow-capped peaks, rugged alpine terrain, glacial valleys, and unique flora and fauna.

The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa’s third-highest mountain range and offer a rare combination of equatorial glaciers, alpine meadows, and tropical rainforest ecosystems.

Activities in Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The park is best known for mountain trekking and climbing adventures. The highest peak, Mount Stanley, rises to 5,109 meters, making it the third-highest in Africa. Trekking to this peak is challenging but immensely rewarding, with hikers passing through diverse vegetation zones, including montane forests, bamboo zones, heathlands, and alpine meadows. Climbers often encounter rare plant species, giant lobelias, and endemic wildlife along the trail.

Guided hikes in the park range from day hikes for beginners to multi-day expeditions for experienced mountaineers. The park also offers nature walks, bird watching, and wildlife spotting in lower elevations. Species such as the Rwenzori turaco, forest monkeys, elephants, buffaloes, and numerous endemic birds make the park a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

Adventure seekers also enjoy exploring the park’s glacial valleys, waterfalls, and rivers, such as the Nyamwamba and Mubuku rivers, which provide stunning scenic views and excellent photography opportunities.

Accommodation in Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains offers a range of accommodation options for trekkers and visitors. For climbers attempting the summit, mountain huts like those at Bujuku, John Matte, and Elena provide rustic but essential lodging with stunning views. These huts are strategically located along the trekking routes, allowing climbers to rest before continuing to higher altitudes.

Outside the mountains, lodges and guesthouses in nearby towns such as Kasese and Fort Portal offer more comfortable accommodations. Popular options include Mount Rwenzori Lodge and Rwenzori View Guesthouse, where visitors can enjoy modern amenities, local cuisine, and scenic views of the surrounding mountains.
